Books and Columns

I adore your book, "Create the Space Your Deserve"! Just now, while reading it over a hot mug of homemade chai, I noticed I was on page 110. My first thought was, "Oh no. I don't want it to end." My second thought was, "Alright, I can't wait to begin."

I've been a bit stymied about the direction to take with the interior of my darling little cottage. Decisions about the exterior were a piece of cake, but the inside...not so much. Your book has helped me relax into the decorating process relying more on my intuition to guide me in creating a home that truly reflects me. Thank you so much for sharing your insight and wisdom with the world!

I so enjoyed reading your comments in my newspaper while I had the glorious 'music of the opera' filling the air of my morning a couple of days ago.

Your refreshing, poignant, and profound phrases were such a welcome (and -unfortunately- necessary) wake-up to us in our national community.  I read every word and the whole made for such a delightful moment in my morning with my newspaper.  We've got a lot to learn (and re-learn).

Thank you for your insight, and review of the basics.  I (for one) loved it.

Kelvin W. Cole, Killingworth

I thought of you because just about everything I've read by you in the weekly paper resonates w/me. I would guess I'm not alone. For those poor souls that haven't read your stuff, seen your work, I want to introduce them to it.  I find your words to be simple, common sense, real (just about the opposite of how most things work in this world). It is what I strive for, it is what I preach.  I know and want the rest to be up to me, as I'm a very independent soul.  But I also know there are people out there that I can learn from (and so can others).  You're one of those people.

I just wanted to let you know that I discovered your book (and you) today, at a time when I needed a pick-me-up oh so badly - and my soul was soothed at first glance!  Thank you - for being who you are, and doing what you do! It has lifted my spirits immensely, refocused my energy positively . . . such the perfect "soul salve" at just the right moment! I had to post about you on FB, so my friends could check you out! I hope you don't mind - I thought it would be selfish of me not to share the discovery!

Been thinking about you a lot this week.  Got to use my JB dinner plates for the first time and then saw the colors of your house on FB and thought that's the combo of green I want on the inside of our house!

I found the color in your book and what just nails me is the color of your exterior entrance - Wheat Grass - is the color I picked out last week!!!  So it's confirmed, I liked it in the store and I love it on your house so it's going somewhere inside!

You know as I paged through your book again - that treasure is nothing short of a brilliant piece of art and wisdom - I said to John, “JB HAS to have a television show, that's all there is to it.  She's a prolific artist, an excellent writer and a great presenter - an interesting woman.  HGTV needs her to take a show up a notch!”

So there you have it.

I am writing again about Jill Butler and her articles.  I can't even explain what they mean to me, so inspiring, so colorful and delightful, so full of ideas, honorary mentions of locals, family and friends...she just does it all:) I love reading her articles and I have to say it is the only article I read from start to finish.  I just don't want to miss anything. I am sure she has helped others along the way with her organized approach to getting things done and looking at things in a different way.

I am so glad but jealous that she is going to Paris in October. Oh and I can't wait to read her articles when she gets back  (maybe it will be a new book).  Her books are the best!

I wanted to say how much I appreciate having Jill Butler as part of your Shoreline paper and again it is the best paper around town.  Keep up the good work!!

Thank you for entertaining me and my friends with your articles.

Sincerely,
Mary Carroll

I love this book! I think the binding choice is wonderful! It makes it easy to leave open on an inspirational page and come back to it. (Last night I left it open to the page about having project tables all around, for my husband, who loves flat surfaces and fills them all! He also liked the photo on page 21 - all the notebooks. That speaks to his engineer-self.)

I love the concepts and the presentation/organization. It is better, more inspirational - than I could have imagined. (I'm not saying this to flatter - I really mean it.) It's bright, happy, warm and personal. I love the illustrations, photos and text. The book was fun to read and the ideas were fun to contemplate. I'm filled with new ideas.

LOVE your book!

It is so beautiful and fun to look at. I received a Borders gift certificate for Christmas and one glance at your book and I was on my way to the check out. I am in the middle of building a new home with a desire to make it look and feel as if it has been there for a very long time. I had the idea that I should start a scrapbook/journal to document the process, not only with paint samples and pictures of claw foot tubs but with little stories and the truth about the emotional process that accompanies the journey.

I was even thinking a blog would be a great way to do the same. These were just thoughts in my mind and then I find your book! A real person with a real life!

I love, love, love it! You have done an amazing job explaining everything and the visuals are great. I could not wait to get home and put my pajamas and fix a cup of tea and devour your book - which I did in one sitting. It is very inspiring in every way and I just wanted you to know how much I have enjoyed getting to know you and your home through your book. I will continue to use it as a source of inspiration and support.

Thank you so much.

Our trip was fantastic! And, we referred to your books often. We even scheduled our morning itinerary around the Marché des Timbre (Stamp Market) you wrote about! Compared to all of the other “travel stuff” I’d collected, your whimsical books were easy-to-use and the perfect introduction to Paris. So, thanks again!

Jen Payne, founder
Rendez-vous with France á la Jill Butler

I'm a creativity researcher and positive psychologist... and I don't usually write fan letters. In fact, the last one I wrote was to law professor Anita Hill (I'm a little nerdy, too). Recently I moved from Kansas to Arizona, and am in the process of setting up a home with my fiancé Tom and our three cats (Phoebe, Max, and Leo). Today, while at Lowe's, Tom handed me your book Create the Space You Deserve, while saying, "here's a book that's just for you."  He knows me well. Your book is fantastic + inspiring + just what I needed.

So: Thank you for adding your voice and imagination to the world. You made my day.

Robyn McKay, PhD
Create the Space You Deserve

When I started reading Jill Butler's book, Create the Space You Deserve, I was captivated. About a month earlier, I had purchased a small cottage which needed updating. I had bought the book for decorating ideas. What I got was much more.

I instantly became aware that what Jill had written about was not merely color, fabrics and decor tips, but...life. I found myself contemplating not only how I wanted my cottage to look, but how I wanted it to feel. How I needed it to feel. And, that once I got it to that point, how I, in fact, would feel differently, more true to myself, more authentic. Happier.

I read her book from cover to cover, several times. Each time I got a little something different, something new, something perfect. And my emotions became in tune with my new cottage.

All that...from a book.

I discovered your 'gem of a book' and it has turned out to be a pedagogical treasure!  Butler's book aids both visually for identifying foods and basic services but also in the phonetic pronunciation of over 1000 illustrations of things you'll need while traveling (or studying).  We use the Rendez-vous book regularly in the classroom.  At last, I have a book that I can confidently say 'has it all".

Author's note:  Mrs. Radar wandered into my studio shortly after the publication of Rendez-vous with France, 2002, and discovered the book and ordered a classroom set for her teaching. Classes have since used the book on trips to French speaking Canada and groups regularly visit my Chester, CT studio to speak about la vie francaise.

As a woman who turns 60 years old in August, I am creating a new seasonal home in the Finger Lakes and I thank you for your inspirational thoughts and ideas.

Many guide books provide translations for food. But none explain the preparation method like ordering something simple like sirloin. Your book is the only one I've seen that discusses how to order very specifically rare, medium rare, or well done meats. There are over 60 pages of food preparations; ingredients and sauces are illustrated along with the specifics for ordering with confidence. A real treasure!

I really enjoyed your webinar.  I am just planning my business and got a lot out of your contribution to the day.  I have always been a journaler, but had gotten out of the habit.  Your course reminded me why I need to keep doing it!  I am excited about the mind map.  Please send me a copy.  I think I will even teach it to my kids.  Thanks again.  I can't wait to get my copy.

I attended Sandy Sullivan and Nancy Schumann's Leadership Practices Course earlier this week and came away truly inspired and motivated.  It was the best class I've ever attended and am so grateful to have taken part in it.  Another highlight was getting to know your birds and we all had a great time shopping for the one that best suited us.  I choose "I'm ready for an upgrade" for myself and she sits on my desk at work.

Many thanks for sharing with us,

Vicki Watkins

I just recently took an LP Practice course through GE/NBC/Universal taught by Sandy Sullivan and Nancy Schumann who are both incredible instructors. At the end of the last day of the course, we were given the opportunity and privilege of choosing one of your amazing pictures.  For many of us, it was an emotional day so it was such a pleasure to see all of your artist faces and read the sayings.  Just watching everyone look for themselves in the faces was so delightful. To be honest, one of the other women in the class actually chose mine for me and it was perfect. I get up every morning and look at it as a reminder of where I want to be. It is a great inspiration to me. I want to thank you, on behalf of myself and everyone in that course, for giving us something to remind us of what we are working towards.

Beverly Hadley, NBC/Universal Director - Property Dept.

I recently attended the Leadership Practices course through GE Healthcare, hosted by Sandy Sullivan and Nancy Schumann.  The course was incredible and I told my General Manager i would recommend it for everyone with interest in redefining themselves and digging deep on how we can transform ourselves, both professionally and personally.

The selection of artwork was a perfect way for each of us to take home something that we could remind ourselves "who we branded ourselves to be" for the present and the future.  I have honestly carried it from room to room (bedroom, office, living area) so i am constantly reminded of my commitment to myself.  After going through the course with Nancy and Sandy, I determined my selection to be "BRACE YOURSELF - I'VE ARRIVED".  Already it has given me motivation to inspire people the way i know i CAN/WILL.

Just a quick note to say thank you for your artistic inspiration - it was a nice touch at the end of an incredible journey.

Lisa F. Shearin, SE Regional Sales Manager, GE Healthcare, CVUS
Leadership Practices, GE Human Resources Collaboration

On behalf of all of the Leadership Practices participants held in Shannon, Ireland last month, I would like to thank you for the great material you have built for the course. The course has been a fantastic experience and is already having a major impact on our lives from both a professional and personal perspective.

The eye-catching binders were a real ‘breath of fresh air’ and set the tone for a completely new leadership experience. Your creative artwork has really inspired us to explore who we are and uncover our individual breakthroughs. Selecting my very own ‘Birds‘nWords’ was a challenge as there were several that really captured who I am and what I am striving for. Having my own ‘Birds’nWords’ provides me with a constant reminder of the experience, my personal breakthrough and the possibilities I have discovered for today and the future.

Sincere thanks to you on behalf of all of the course attendees,

Avril Cornu, GE HR Manager - South Europe
Leadership Practices, GE Human Resources Collaboration

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Practices (LP) course at GE, led by Sandy Sullivan and Nancy Schumann.  Needless to the say, the course was phenomenal and the timing for me as a leader both personally and professionally could not have been better.

It is my understanding we were the first class to use the new, colorful binders filled with your inspiring artwork.  Even walking into the room the first morning of class, the artwork on the binder caught participants attention and set a positive tone for what was to come.   Looking at each of the birds and their mantras gave us pause to evaluate how they reflected in our lives; something we excelled at, something we wanted to be, or something we had not yet considered and now have front of mind for future breakthroughs.  As I sit here in my office with my chosen bird of “being is what I am doing” next to my monitor, I am reminded to remain present and to be inspiring and courageous as a leader through all my actions.

The combination of your birds, your artwork and the expertise of Sandy and Nancy made the course a wonderful experience of growth and renewed spirit.  On behalf of the April 23-24th Leadership Practices attendees, THANK YOU for your contribution to our memorable experience!

This is fanmail! I read with pleasure your "ode" to summer in last week's Shoreline Times. I'm sure many other people did, too.

I wanted to let you know that your workshop I attended last spring continues to resonate with me. (I can't attend either of your workshops later this month because of a previous commitment and a mini-vacation, though I would participate again if I could.) Anyway, I was writing regularly in my journal in the morning for a while and then stopped. I can't even explain to myself why. But recently I've again picked up that exemplary habit, which really creates a good start for my day.

I am so glad I was part of your excellent workshop. Keep on keepin' on! And enjoy the rest of your summer. I know I will, and your feature column is going to help me achieve that end.

Yes, it was great on Saturday! You are a truly wise woman.

I was continuing to clean out my office when I had yet another flash of insight! If I keep cleaning my office of the clutter I don't want, there will be only 1 1/2 xerox boxes (approximately) to carry out of here when I leave. So, I have put the few things I care about on one shelf for easy and quick removal at the appropriate time. When I leave, they can call a dumpster in. I do have to tend to my computer stuff though.

Thanks - I'm really, really happy with the progress I've made! Thanks again for the firecracker(s)!

Workshops

"Be Bold" came to me in my sleep last night :)

Lisa Bousquet, photo journalist

Thank you for all the insights I gained yesterday. The program was certainly more than I expected it to be, and I loved meeting you and my new colleagues. It was difficult to say good-bye.

As I drove home, I was thinking about ways to improve my studio workshop and I suddenly realized that I have a porch that is not being used to its full potential (aha!). Although I cleared out all the junk from the rest of the house, I still must do that in my studio and the porch, so now I have a plan to improve and enlarge my space! I'm sure I wouldn't have thought of this if I hadn't taken your workshop (well, I didn't, so that just goes to show you!), so thanks a million!

I hope we can keep in touch - I'll let you know my progress.

Part 2:

I've been working on my studio and have great news - I've cleared away a lot of unused and unusable stuff! It was incredibly liberating!

Last weekend I was in a show and received a lot of direct feedback on my work; also, I could observe what did and didn't attract potential buyers. This helped me begin to decide just what type of work I want to continue doing. I came back home and cleared out everything I didn't need and couldn't use. I was able to bring a lot to the library for children's program use as well as to the swap shop at the dump. And I'm now in the process of setting up the room for the way I need to use it.

The most interesting aspect of this process is that it did not take long to accomplish. The longest part was thinking about doing it.

Thanks a million for your inspiration.

Creating Your Vision One Workshop

I left energized 1) by conversation in a safe welcoming circle with women all struggling to create space for shelved dreams--creative, personal, professional--and 2) with tools for transforming wishes into reality. Examples? I moved to Chester within the year. I'm co-hosting a monthly poetry/music jam. And I'm collaborating with various artists on prose and lyric projects.

If you have not yet had the fortune to meet Jill, I can attest that her stories and generosity inspire, encourage, and energize. Warning: you may leave wearing dancing shoes!

My biggest surprise about this program is how far I have come and grown in the last year and how much I enjoyed and learned from the rest of the group. We all have very valuable skills that we can use and share with others in our lives and this will give us inner happiness and less fear about our true selves.

Jill's style is uplifting and enthusiastic. She is able to zone in on someone's direct issue and help them figure out their true vision, which is the primary step for everyone.

Creating Your Vision Intensive Workshop

The biggest surprise from this program was how well the course complemented the work that I was doing to find my next career position.  When I started the class, coincidentally, I found myself out of work due to staff reduction.  The course helped me to define with greater precision what I really wanted in my next position.  I found that as I conducted informational interviews with my networking contacts, that I could be much clearer about what I was seeking in my next position.  And, having this level of clarity, I was more capable of demonstrating to those whom I was interviewing a higher level of confidence and understanding about who I am and what I would bring to the organization.  Also, with a clearer understanding of what I was seeking in terms of the type of organizational culture and environment, I was better able to quickly identify organizations that I would maintain relationships with and organizations that I would eliminate from consideration.  The end result was that the course enhanced the efficiency of my search by helping me to focus my attention more clearly only on those organizations that resonated with my vision.

Emelia
Creating Your Vision Intensive Workshop

We came with ideas - Jill showed us how to move them forward with a creative process that was systematic yet free-flowing. Daily journaling, mind mapping, and follow-ups by phone kept us on track as we transformed concepts that had been little more than recurring dreams into achievable visions.

Jill provided essential encouragement and inspiration to guide us while the intimate workshop setting and synergistic energy of our small group added an element of fun and excitement to the experience.

I would recommend this workshop to anyone looking to set a course for the future – treat yourself to this time to dream, plan, and speak your truth.

Thank you so much for an amazing night.  I haven't stopped thinking about your suggestion to re-write my story.  I also wanted you to know that despite my workload and family, that when I woke up Wednesday morning I began reading it and couldn't put it down.  In between work and appointments I managed to have it finished by 4pm.  WOW!  I laughed, reflected and thought of my next steps in life.  How and if I can change my house to be the home I want and need it to be or if I must focus on a long term goal to find the right house that will one day reflect myself and the vision I have for my family in better way and bring me what I hope to achieve in my life which is peace within.  I know it won't be an easy answer and I have a lot of questions to ask myself, but one thing is for sure that I left with a renewed hope of my inner self that I was so excited to share with my husband and children that I hope will point me in the right direction.

Thank you again and I am sure I will see you again for another night of

Thank you for such a wonderful workshop...it really was inspiring and brought a lot of ideas and insights to the surface. I loved the diversity of the women that participated - I could have listened for many more hours to their life stories.

I have several concepts brewing as to how I can get out of my rut - you helped provide me with a kind of framework to begin to take the first steps - not quite sure what they are yet but am sure they will reveal themselves in time. And I will have you know that I have hauled out those blank journals and have actually done a few pages of writing along with artwork. So I guess that *is* the first step!
