Designing vertically is how I approach a design collection. This example is The Jill Butler Tabletop Collection created for Sisson Imports, Seattle, WA. We started with the Chez Pastis oval tray followed by the imagined place, the bistrot Chez Pastis. A series of bistrots, the wine bar, and village merchant storefronts followed. Trays, napkins, placemats, glassware, dinnerware, textiles, postcards and magnets were designed to cross product lines and compliment each other. These imagined places grew from 16 years of living in Paris. I came to know how to draw the France that represents what we Americans feel is quintessentially french. Together with Sisson we knew what we Americans
